The usually enthusiastic Belinda was even more hyper than usual about her fifth Top 10 trophy (not that any of us are blaming her one bit, of course).

“I thought I didn’t really stand a chance, but told myself that I would give it my all anyway,” she told us. “When Quan Yifong said that the next winner was quite over-the-top, I wondered if she was referring to me, because she always calls me a drama queen!”

Sure enough, her guess was accurate, but even then, her mind “went blank” when she heard her name being called, and she “felt a lot of different emotions at the same time”. “This was a really big surprise, and I hope it serves as a reminder to everyone that you won’t go wrong as long as you work hard and put your heart into your work.”

Carrie Wong

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 4

She may have triumphed in this category four consecutive times so far, but Carrie doesn’t take her popularity and success for granted, acknowledging that getting the honour “is definitely no walk in the park”.

“My heart still races every year when I find out that I’m nominated,” she said. “That’s why I’m still very thankful, and hearing audiences say that they like watching my performance is a great motivation to me.”

When asked if she offered any consolation to her good friend Hayley Woo for failing to get into the Top 10, Carrie said that she gave her a hug after she came off stage, and that before the ceremony even began, she had told her that the outcome of such awards is impossible to predict, and that she should try not to overthink it.

“Even though she didn’t manage to bring home an award this year, there will still be more chances down the road.”

Felicia Chin

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 8

Felicia was as chirpy as ever as she gushed about getting the opportunity to thank her mother in person on stage, as the latter was attending the Star Awards ceremony for the very first time (with three friends in tow, no less!).

Of course, her beau Jeffrey Xu was not left out. Although he did not get into this year’s Top 40, Felicia reported that “he was even more nervous” than she was, and is just as over the moon as she is about her win.

“When I was looking at the live feed while giving my acceptance speech, Jeffrey looked like he was crying, and I was so touched that I felt like I had to thank him too,” she said, adding that he has been faithfully voting for her through the telepoll hotlines (like any good partner would and should).

With her eighth Top 10 gong, Felicia is now officially the closest female artiste to “graduating” to the All-Time Favourite ranks, but instead of fretting, she just wants to take it easy and simply enjoy every Star Awards ceremony she attends year after year.

Jin Yin Ji

Arguably one of the biggest - but also the most touching - surprises of the night was Jin Jie’s (as she’s affectionately called) first Top 10 trophy, which was also her first award ever in her 30-odd years in the biz. Many of the audience members in the MES Theatre were moved to tears by this pleasant plot twist, and even gave the veteran actress-host a standing ovation - a rare sight for this category.

“I was trembling [on stage] - how is it possible [for me to win the Top 10 award]?” Yin Ji, still visibly overwhelmed, told us during our post-show interview. “Life begins at 70. I never harboured such hopes for the past 30 years and I always treated [the Star Awards] as any other normal event.”

She continued, “I’m just happy to see my ‘sons and daughters’ (her co-stars) on stage as this is something for the youngsters. I just try my best to bring my roles to life, be punctual for work, have a good relationship with my kids and actors.”

And it seems like the 71-year-old is already optimistic about the next decade. “I need to take one award every year and I’ll complete the collection at 80,” she quipped. “I’ll probably break records as the oldest All-Time Favourite Artiste!”

Kym Ng

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 10

It took two long decades, but Kym and her fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief and “retire” from the Top 10 race as she has successfully nabbed her 10th trophy, enabling her to join the coveted ranks of the All-Time Favourite Artistes next year. Better late than never, right? And besides, it coincided nicely with her first Best Supporting Actress win.

“I’m really thankful to my fans for not giving up on me for the past 20 years,” she said. “They’ve been tirelessly voting for me all this time, and they can finally call it a day!”

Even her famous friends were working hard to “lobby” for votes so that she could finish strong. “Bryan (Wong) in particular was very shamelessly asking his followers to vote for me,” she chortled. “Dasmond Koh and Quan Yifong did the same, which touched me greatly.”

Paige Chua

She may have missed out on the Best Actress accolade (despite being a hot favourite among the media and fans), but Paige did not go home empty-handed last night as she picked up her fourth Top 10 trophy.

“I'm so thankful to my fans, family and friends who always have a hard time at this time of the year voting for me,” she said. “I have to rush back to Penang tomorrow morning to film Blessings 2, so I might not have time to celebrate with them before I leave.”

However, that did not stop Paige from planning to take pictures with her loyal devotees, who were waiting for her at the event, to thank them and also to offer them pastries she bought from Penang, where she will be filming Blessings 2 until mid-May. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to have a proper celebration when I’m back!”

Pan Ling Ling

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 5

The last time Ling Ling received a Top 10 award, her oldest son was barely a year old. He is now 18 going on 19, and got to see his mum go on the Star Awards stage for the very first time last night. That’s how long it has been.

“I felt a lot of pressure because my mother also reminded me that it’s been some time since I went on stage to receive an award!” she said. “There are so many people that I have to thank, like those who have spent their time and money voting for me for the past 18 years but never saw me win.”

Ling Ling also shared that her husband, former actor Huang Shinan, was also very hard-working and supportive. “He told me, ‘You get disappointed every year, but I really hope to see you win this time.’”

Putting his wishes into action, Shinan, who was also at the show last night, said that he told their son to give Ling Ling a last push of support, which he did by asking all his friends to cast a vote. This tactic clearly worked out in the end!

It came as no surprise to us when Becks picked up her seventh gong last night, as the actress has a track record of successfully adding another trophy to her collection every time she receives a Top 10 nomination.

She shared with us that she prepared a speech for the Top 10 award, but not the Best Actress category, which she felt was unexpected.

“I’m really thankful to all the industry seniors. Without your love, care and guidance, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I’m thankful to the company for giving me lots of opportunities. I’m thankful to my fans, and to my family for their unconditional love,” she mused on stage. “I also want to thank my friends for the positive energy that they’ve showered on me, and I want to thank all members of the cast and crew who have ever worked with me. I’ll work harder and become even better.”

Sheila Sim

After going home empty-handed for the past two years, Sheila was understandably elated at finally adding a Top 10 trophy to her collection. “I never expected to feel so nervous because I always see my fellow artistes go on stage to get their awards,” she confessed. “As they were giving out the prizes, I kept exchanging glances with the hosts and I wondered, “Is it going to be me?” and I was so nervous that my entire body was heating up.”

Gushing that the feeling of going on stage to get an award is “amazing”, she added that she was especially happy to receive her first award from Han Wei, “because I’ve learned so much from him. Apart from being colleagues and friends, he’s also my mentor.”

She wasn’t the most nervous, however, as she chuckled, “My husband texted me and told me that he was so nervous that his heart almost fell out of his chest, and that he might not be able to watch the awards next year because he can’t handle the stress!”

Ya Hui

Ya Hui

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 3

For the second year running, Ya Hui has emerged victorious in the Top 10 battle, and she shared that two people that she hasn’t managed to thank on-stage are none other than her parents.

She explained, “I’ve never thanked them on stage because we’re a traditional family. Saying ‘Thank you’ or ‘I love you’ on stage would make me feel awkward, so I want to take this opportunity to thank them. I’m grateful to them for always putting up with my bad temper. Sometimes after a long day at work, I get back home in a bad mood because I’m really tired. I don’t talk much and have a short fuse when that happens, but they’ve always been very supportive of me and loved me in spite of this.”

Musing that her personal philosophy that an actor should work towards is for the audience to tell you, ‘I really like watching the dramas that you’re in’, rather than to earn a lot of money, she added that it “really hasn’t been an easy road for me in showbiz. Thank you to everyone who liked the dramas that I worked on!”

With nine Top 10 trophies under his belt, the NoonTalk head honcho is officially the closest artiste to “graduating” into All-Time Favourite Artiste status.

“I’m so thankful to be given the chance to return home this year - it feels really great,” he said. “When my friends found out that I was nominated, they had a lot of different thoughts, perhaps because they thought I wouldn’t get the chance to stand on this stage again.”

He went on, “I’m still thankful to those who have supported me over the years. This is my ninth trophy. I hope that (my career) will last for a long time.”

Dennis might only be on his eighth Top 10 trophy, but he already has his sights set on a lofty goal: to be introduced as an All-Time Favourite Artiste with Zheng Ge Ping in 2021.

He admitted, “I was a bit overwhelmed when I went on stage because I didn’t quite know what to do or what to say. None of us know how the audience felt about our performance for the past year, but now I know that my effort didn’t go to waste.”

“After acting in 118 for three years, memorising the script everyday and waking up at 4am daily for my radio broadcast, I’m really thankful that my hard work has paid off, but at the same time I also feel bad for my fans who have been voting for me continuously,” he shared. “The word ‘touched’ doesn’t fully describe how I feel right now. The people who voted for me don’t know me personally, but voted for me anyway, so I’m really thankful and beyond touched.”

The newest member of the Best Actor club admitted that he “kind of regrets” what he said during his supposedly lacklustre speech on stage.

“I just came back [from Hong Kong and Shenzhen] and I haven’t really gotten used to being back yet, so I didn’t really prepare myself,” he said. “My friend sent me a text saying that I should try to pen something down before going on stage but I only wrote ‘thank you’ before my mind went blank.”

When we asked if there’s anything that he would like to add on that he didn’t get to say earlier, he said that there’s “too much”. “I didn’t properly thank the company nor my managers. There have been ups and downs in my career in the past few years, and I feel pretty emotional thinking about everything that I’ve been through - the good and the bad.”

“I’m really happy that the people who support me appreciate the hard work that I’ve done, and in 2017, I told myself that I wanted to put my focus on my acting, and I did just that.” And look where it got him.

Guo Liang

We’re all familiar with the charismatic and well-spoken Guo Liang that we see on television, but today, we saw a side of him that we rarely see - an emotional one. His eyes filled with tears as he spoke to us following his win, and he explained that he felt particularly touched because of one sentence that many fellow artistes said to him after he was announced as the winner: “You’ve worked hard.”

Sharing that it was difficult to describe how he felt at the moment, he added that the struggles that they go through is something that only fellow artistes would be able to understand. “I’ve been working hard for many years, and to be able to go on stage today was particularly poignant as it was as though I was given a pat on the back for a job well done.”

Pierre has never been one to vote for himself nor ask his friends and family to vote for him at the Star Awards. Prior to last night, his only other Top 10 nod was in 2012.

Sharing with Toggle that he felt surprised to receive the award this year, he admitted that he only prepared his speech for the Best Actor award, but ended up “forgetting all of it once I went on stage”.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me, and those who have criticised me. Everything that has been said has a reason behind it, and I’ll work even harder. I’ll listen to what you said and improve myself,” he declared.

Pornsak

Pornsak wasn’t able to make it to the show to receive his seventh award last night, which meant that his fellow LeftProfile artiste Lee Teng went on stage to accept the trophy on his behalf.

“It’s so awkward being cued on stage!” he said with an embarrassed laugh. “My company sent me a text telling me that just in case he won, I should thank everyone on his behalf. He has a family matter to attend to today, so he can’t be here. I hope everyone continues to support him. Thank you very much!”

Instead of being subtly shooed off by cue music like most winners experience, Romeo revealed that he was actually given the signal to lengthen his acceptance speech, which made him even more nervous.

“Thankfully, I saw Joanne [Peh]’s signal, so I immediately mentioned her name. I know that she called the telepoll hotline to vote for me twice, but she told me that she accidentally called a few more times because the number was in her most recent calls. I told her that it was really effective! (laughs)”

As for his Best Actor loss, Romeo remained in good spirits and assured us that while it is “a pity”, he is not disappointed. “It’s not that I wasn’t good enough. In fact, I’d give myself a pat on the back for my performance (in Life Less Ordinary) because this is the first time I’ve tried such a role in the seven or so years of my career. Being able to present it in such a way that let both the media and public compliment me is already the best form of encouragement that I could receive.”

“I’m still young, so I’ll work even harder and I believe that one day, I’ll be able to stand on stage to win a performance award again, be it a Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor award.”

Shaun Chen

Shaun Chen

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste awards: 2

Shaun has been in showbiz since the early 2000s, so it may come as a surprise to some that this actor is only receiving his second Top 10 gong this year.

He shared, “I’m really surprised to win this year because I’ve been nominated for the Top 10 quite a few times but usually went home empty-handed. I’m really thankful to those who have supported me, and as for those I didn’t manage to thank on-stage, I’ll send them a text to thank them tomorrow.”

Giving a special shout-out to his wife, Celine, who was in the audience today, he added that he “knows that it’s been hard on her looking after our two children. I know that it’s hard for her, which is why I work even harder to support her. I’ll work even harder from now on.”

With a grin, he added that he got an extra boost of energy when his elder daughter, Nellie, shouted ‘Daddy!’ as he was giving his speech on stage. “It was pretty loud!” he chuckled. “She has quite the character.”

Another victory we didn’t see coming last night was that of Thomas, who wasn’t even present to be given his fourth Top 10 trophy in person. Instead, Mightiest Mother-in-Law co-star Chen Li Ping did the honours for him, and even she had trouble hiding her bewilderment.

“Wow. It’s a surprise that he won this award,” she said as she accepted the accolade on his behalf on stage. “What I wanted to say is this: regardless of whether you win awards or not, the most important thing is to do a good job with your acting - that’s how we’re able to repay our audiences. Thank you!

Ge Ping is another step closer to All-Time Favourite Artiste status with his eighth win.

“I want to thank everyone for helping me receive this award today,” he said in his acceptance speech. “Of course, I have to thank my family, and also my brothers who have helped me a lot. This award is yours. Thank you.”
