Celeb glo-ups: Star Awards edition

A look at our celebs' first Star Awards vs. their 2018 looks shows that (almost) all of them upgraded their style in a major way.

Rebecca Lim: 2005 vs. 2018

Before becoming the style icon that she is today (and looking like a million bucks in this sparkly Elie Saab gown), Becks attended the Star Awards in what looks like a prom dress from Forever 21 and a whole lot of bronzer.

Aloysius Pang: 2013 vs. 2018

Say what you want about the “braided” sleeve and the lapel that is five inches too thick, at least Aloy looks like he dressed for an award show as opposed to intern Pang in 2013.

Andie Chen and Ya Hui: 2007 vs. 2018

Andie: Andie is follically blessed. But we much prefer his hair when it’s tied back in a “hipster” man bun than when it is left to flourish like a lion’s mane.

Ya Hui: Ya Hui’s skinny eyebrows, flat-top hair, and wrinkled dress are no match for sleek and sexy look she’s adopted for the present day.

We love both Carrie’s black gowns, but extra points for the sexier and sultrier look this year.

In six years, Jayley went from blogshop babe to couture queen.

Hayley Woo: 2013 vs. 2018

Like her twin, Hayley did a 180, going from Barbie to goth bride. So. Much. Better.

Desmond Tan: 2007 vs. 2018

Desmond Tan: 2007 vs. 2018

While we can’t say we liked Desmond’s chest-baring top at this year’s awards, it’s definitely way less basic than his corporate-looking suit. Plus, his oppa-waves are a major improvement from whatever fluffiness was going on in 2007.

Xu Bin: 2013 vs. 2018

Xu Bin: 2013 vs. 2018

Xu Bin’s always had a penchant for neutrals, but what a difference putting on a tie and tucking in his shirt made.

Edwin Goh: 2012 vs. 2018

While the floral blazer with the printed tee are a tad overkill, at least they are easier on the eyes than the double bows Edwin donned in 2012.

Paige Chua: 2009 vs. 2018

Paige admitted that she didn’t feel comfortable in her dress at her first Star Awards - and it showed. By 2018, the Best Actress nominee was a red carpet veteran and her sleek and understated gown, specially designed by local designer Keith Png, proved it.

Elvin Ng: 2005 vs. 2018

Elvin Ng: 2005 vs. 2018

Elvin went from cringe worthy (his words, not ours) to one of the best dressed at this year’s Star Awards. This lacy Dolce & Gabbana suit is classic with a twist.

Bonnie Loo: 2013 vs. 2018

Bonnie Loo: 2013 vs. 2018

Bonnie has grown a lot in the past five years, both professionally and in terms of style – there’s a world of difference between her babydoll look from 2013, versus her vampy red lips and backless gown at this year’s ceremony.

Romeo Tan: 2011 vs. 2018

Romeo Tan: 2011 vs. 2018

Romeo made his Star Awards debut looking like “a character from Sesame Street”. This year, with his handsome Ralph Lauren tux, he looks like a legit oppa.

Ben Yeo: 2007 vs. 2018

Ben Yeo: 2007 vs. 2018

This year's streetwear-inspired Christian Dada suit screams "Ben Yeo". His 2007 outfit, on the other hand, looks like it was pulled from his dad’s wardrobe. And can we all agree that this shade of purple looks good on no one but Barney?

Hong Ling: 2014 vs. 2018

Hong Ling: 2014 vs. 2018

Looks like Hong Ling’s got a penchant for sheer fabrics! While we were not too crazy about her chartreuse gown, her hair and makeup make her look much more polished than she did back in the day.

We’re not crazy about the boring suit, but at least Jeffrey ditched the wings – all four of them.

Kate Pang: 2011 vs. 2018

Kate Pang: 2011 vs. 2018

As cute as Kate was a fresh-faced new actress in 2011, her Guess outfit at this year’s Star Awards made much more of a statement.

Talk about a Cinderella story: Style-wise, Ian went from wait staff to esteemed guest in just six years.

If Meixin were a Pokemon, her 2018 look would be a clear evolution from eight years ago.

Though Zhen Huan did very well for his Star Awards debut, he has blossomed into his full fashion potential as a leading man.

Kimberly Chia: 2012 vs. 2018

Kimberly’s steampunk-inspired outfit isn’t our favourite Star Awards outfit of hers, but it’s miles ahead of the uber-casual (and wrinkled!) neon minidress she wore in 2012.

Sheila Sim: 2015 vs. 2018

The Marc Jacobs sequinned backless gown Sheila wore at this year’s ceremony gave us flashbacks of the dazzling one she donned to her first Star Awards, except better. It’s striking, stunning, and simply perfection.

Shane Pow: 2013 vs. 2018

Sure, we weren’t crazy about Shane’s outfit this year, but at least it’s more congruent – and better fitting –  than what he wore five years ago.

GLO-DOWN: Lee Teng, 2005 vs. 2018

When we saw Lee Teng’s half-hearted mullet, we thought he had no where to go but up, but apparently he had other plans. Can we just remove the braids already?
